Open Living Room went Mushroom Picking!

Published

On Wednesday, October 1st, our Open Living Room community enjoyed a wonderful mushroom-picking trip in Mustavuori, Helsinki. What a perfect autumn day it was! Some of us returned with baskets full of forest treasures, others found just a few, but everyone soaked in the fresh forest air, made new connections, and learned more about Finnish mushrooms and the joy of foraging together.

A heartfelt thank-you to Elizabeth Eriksson for guiding us through the magical world of mushroom foraging. Your knowledge and enthusiasm made the day both educational and inspiring. We’re also deeply grateful for the great turnout and the warm, welcoming atmosphere, it’s always special to share these small outdoor adventures as a community.

Mushroom Picking in Finland – A Cherished Autumn Tradition

Mushroom foraging is one of Finland’s most loved autumn traditions. As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, people across the country head into the forests to look for edible mushrooms like chanterelles (kantarelli), porcini (herkkutatti), and milk caps (russula).

Thanks to Finland’s unique “Everyman’s Rights” (jokamiehenoikeudet), everyone has the freedom to roam the forests and pick mushrooms, berries, and other wild foods, as long as nature is treated with care and respect.

The mushroom season in Finland typically runs from late August to October, depending on the weather. For many, it’s not just about gathering food, it’s about reconnecting with nature, breathing in the scent of pine and moss, and enjoying the calm beauty of the Finnish forest.

We’re already looking forward to our next community outing! Until then, happy foraging, and may your next walk in the woods bring you a basket full of golden chanterelles and happy memories.
