Welcome to your pathway into Finnish society in Swedish!
Finland is a proudly bilingual country where Swedish forms a vibrant and central part of our society, professional life and culture. Choosing to integrate in Swedish is an option that opens unique doors to the Swedish-speaking network, educational pathways and the labour market, particularly in regions such as Uusimaa (Nyland), Åboland and Ostrobothnia.
(Did you know that it is an objective in the current government programme to increase the proportion of immigrants integrating in Swedish to 5–10 per cent?)

Is It Possible to Integrate Through Swedish?
Yes, absolutely. In Finland, you get to choose how you integrate. Swedish has been part of Finnish society for centuries and is fully supported by law. Whether during orientation, when creating your integration plan, or through further education, the choice is yours, and municipalities are required to make that choice possible.
Swedish is an official language in Finland, and you have the legal right to choose it as your path to integration at every stage of the process.
What does the law say about Swedish-language integration?
According to the Finnish Integration Act (Act on the Promotion of Immigrant Integration), Finnish law gives you the right to integrate through Swedish. The Integration Act sees integration as a two-way process, society supports you with the tools you need, while you keep your own culture and language.
When you choose Swedish as your integration language, you are entitled to:
- An integration plan in Swedish: If you are registered as an unemployed jobseeker, or apply for social assistance, an individual plan is drawn up detailing how you can achieve your goals.
- Integration training: The right to language courses in Swedish and other training that supports your pathway into the Finnish labour market.

For Swedish Integration
ENG – Our vision is to improve integration in Swedish so that recently arrived adults, families, children, and young people have the possibility to integrate in Swedish in a way that suits them. Cooperation between the authorities and the third sector is necessary for the strengthening of Swedish integration, as well as hearing the voice of the immigrants, and including them in the development work. In our strategy Swedish Integration Paths and Pitfalls in the Capital Region – A Strategy with 15 Measures we highlight several actors, Luckan being one of them.
Below you can read more about the strategy and the parts that we at Luckan continued to work with.
Integrating in Swedish
On the webpage we collect information about the Swedish language in the Capital Region; such as language courses, educational opportunities, job seekers and leisure activities, to facilitate an establishment here for the whole family.

Guidance for Families
We have explored different ways to support families with an international background whose children are in Swedish-language education in the Capital Region. After offering individual guidance appointments for families, we have shifted our focus to working with schools, teachers and daycare centres, providing them with the information and tools they need to better support these families. We have also created a guide to help schools and educators easily find relevant information for families navigating Swedish-language education in Finland.
Welcome to the Capital Region
We send an annual welcome letter to people who have moved to the Capital Region and whose mother tongue is not Finnish, Swedish or Sami. In the letter we briefly present the two national languages of Finland, and the Swedish language in Finland and in the Capital Region. This year the mailing was in four languages; Swedish, Finnish, English and Ukrainian.
The Welcome! letter from Spring 2026.

fritid.fi, a bilingual portal for Swedish-language leisure activities
fritid.fi is a search portal, in Swedish and English, which makes it easier to find and/or share information on Swedish-language free-time activities in the Capital Region.
